- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) | Compassionate Healing Institute, LLC
Learn how Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps treat OCD, anxiety, eating disorders, and more. Discover effective tools to change thoughts and behaviors. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Evidence-Based Therapy for Anxiety, OCD, Eating Disorders, and More Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a proven, practical, and highly effective approach for treating a wide range of mental health concerns. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, OCD, eating disorders, or stress-related issues, CBT offers tools that create lasting change. At Compassionate Healing Institute, we specialize in CBT therapy that helps individuals break unhelpful thought patterns, develop healthier behaviors, and improve emotional well-being—so you can live with greater clarity, balance, and confidence. What Is CBT? CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is a short- to medium-term, goal-oriented form of psychotherapy that helps you understand how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected—and how to change them to feel better. In CBT, you’ll learn how to: Identify negative thinking patterns and cognitive distortions Challenge unhelpful beliefs and assumptions Develop healthier, more realistic thought habits Change behaviors that reinforce anxiety, avoidance, or depression Practice new coping strategies in daily life CBT is focused on the present and emphasizes skills and strategies that empower you beyond the therapy room. What Can CBT Help With? CBT is one of the most widely researched therapies and is considered the gold standard for treating: Anxiety disorders (including GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias) Depression and low mood Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, ARFID) PTSD and trauma-related symptoms Health anxiety and chronic worry Perfectionism and self-criticism Stress, burnout, and sleep issues It’s also a powerful approach for those experiencing life transitions, low self-esteem, or who want to develop more adaptive ways to cope with everyday challenges. CBT for OCD: Targeting Obsessions and Compulsions at the Core Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for OCD is one of the most effective treatments for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, especially when it includes Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—a specialized form of CBT. OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) meant to neutralize those thoughts or reduce anxiety. Common OCD themes include contamination, harm, perfectionism, religious scrupulosity, checking, and more. In CBT for OCD, we help you: Identify and understand OCD triggers and patterns Use ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) to gradually face feared thoughts or situations without engaging in compulsions Learn how to tolerate uncertainty and discomfort in a structured way Build long-term resilience and confidence in managing OCD symptoms Our approach is compassionate, tailored, and evidence-based, helping you gain more adaptive ways of responding to thoughts without reinforcing OCD cycles. CBT for Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating CBT is a leading treatment for eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and ARFID. We use CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and other specialized protocols to help clients: Challenge disordered beliefs about food, weight, and body image Normalize eating patterns and reduce food-related anxiety Interrupt binge-purge or restrictive behavior cycles Reconnect with natural hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues Develop long-term strategies for emotional regulation and self-care CBT for eating disorders may include meal support, behavioral experiments, and exposures to feared foods, helping clients replace fear-based choices with balanced, intuitive eating. What to Expect in CBT Therapy CBT is collaborative, structured, and focused on action. During your sessions, you can expect to: Set meaningful treatment goals and track progress Learn and apply cognitive and behavioral tools between sessions Receive feedback and guidance in a supportive environment Address stuck patterns, avoidance, or distress in real time Leave each session with strategies you can use right away You’ll also likely engage in homework—short exercises or thought logs—to reinforce what you’re learning and help you make steady, sustainable progress. Benefits of CBT Proven effectiveness for a wide range of mental health concerns Skills-based approach that empowers long-term growth Short- to medium-term structure, typically 8–20 sessions Tailored to your goals and updated as progress unfolds Effective in-person or via telehealth Whether you’re new to therapy or looking to restart with a fresh approach, CBT offers a clear, supportive path toward meaningful change. Is CBT Right for You? Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is ideal for individuals who: Want to actively participate in their healing Are looking for practical strategies to reduce symptoms Struggle with OCD, anxiety, eating disorders, or depression Feel stuck in cycles of negative thinking or avoidance Want support in building emotional resilience and healthy routines We tailor CBT to fit your life—whether you’re in college, parenting, returning to work, or managing chronic stress. - Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy For Autistic Individuals | Compassionate Healing Institute, LLC
Compassionate Healing Institute provides neurodiversity-affirming therapy for autistic individuals, supporting wellbeing, identity, and personalized mental health care. Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy for Autistic Individuals Autism is a natural and meaningful neurotype. Autistic individuals bring unique strengths in focus, creativity, honesty, pattern recognition, and deep interest-based learning. Yet the world is often designed around neurotypical expectations, which can lead to stress, burnout, anxiety, and challenges in daily life. Our practice provides neurodiversity-affirming therapy for autistic individuals, including those who are diagnosed, self-identified, or are exploring the possibility that they might be autistic. Therapy is adapted to your sensory needs, communication style, and goals—you never have to mask or “be less autistic” to receive support. What Is Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy? Neurodiversity-affirming therapy recognizes that: Autism is a natural neurological variation, not a disorder to cure. Differences in communication, sensory processing, and routines are valid. Many challenges come from environmental mismatch—not from autism itself. Autistic individuals deserve therapy that adapts to them, not the other way around. This approach provides mental health support while respecting and celebrating autistic identity. Areas of Support for Autistic Individuals Autistic clients come to therapy for a wide range of reasons. Common focus areas include: Autistic Burnout & Chronic Stress Understanding causes, rebuilding energy, and preventing future burnout. Anxiety, OCD, and Co-Occurring Conditions Evidence-based treatment adapted for autistic individuals. Sensory Overload & Emotional Regulation Identifying sensory triggers, creating supportive environments, and developing regulation strategies. Executive Functioning & Daily Life Skills Collaborative tools for organization, planning, task initiation, and structuring routines—without shame. Relationship & Communication Support Working on mutual understanding, boundary-setting, and authentic communication. Identity Exploration, Late Identification, & Unmasking Processing new self-understanding, reducing internalized stigma, and building a sustainable lifestyle Autism and OCD: Understanding the Overlap Many autistic individuals also experience Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), but standard OCD models often overlook the unique ways it can appear in autistic individuals. Distinguishing autism-related traits from OCD is important so treatment is both effective and affirming. Why Autism and OCD Are Frequently Confused Some autistic traits can resemble OCD, including: Preference for predictability or routine Repetitive behaviors or stimming Intense focus on specific interests Sensory-based patterns or avoidance These are not OCD and should not be treated as compulsions. What OCD Looks Like in Autistic Individuals OCD in autistic individuals often includes: Intrusive, unwanted, anxiety-causing thoughts Compulsions performed to relieve distress, not to self-regulate Rituals that feel burdensome rather than soothing Mental compulsions or rumination Difficulty explaining internal experiences due to alexithymia A neurodiversity-informed assessment helps differentiate autistic routines, sensory stims, and comforting patterns from true OCD compulsions. This ensures clients receive the right type of support. Why Autism and OCD Often Co-Occur Research shows a higher rate of OCD among autistic individuals due to: Chronic anxiety from inaccessible environments Masking and pressure to conform Sensory overload and high vigilance Detail-oriented cognitive styles This is not because autism “causes” OCD, but because certain life conditions overlap. Neurodiversity-Affirming OCD Treatment for Autistic Individuals Traditional Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—the gold standard for OCD—can be highly effective for autistic individuals when adapted respectfully. Our approach includes: Sensory accommodations during ERP Predictable structure and clear explanations Modified pacing to avoid overwhelm Direct communication without ambiguity Adjustments for autistic burnout Protecting stimming and sensory regulation (never treating them as compulsions) The goal is to treat OCD effectively without suppressing autistic behaviors or identity. We use evidence-based modalities, including CBT, ACT, ERP, and sensory-informed strategies, adapted specifically for autistic communication, processing, and sensory needs. Every session is collaborative, transparent, and paced according to client comfort. Clients never have to mask, translate their experience into neurotypical language, or pretend to be someone they’re not. This service is designed for: Autistic individuals Self-diagnosed or questioning individuals Late-identified autistic individuals Autistic individuals experiencing OCD or anxiety Neurodivergent individuals seeking affirming, respectful mental health care If you’re unsure whether your experiences stem from autism, OCD, anxiety, or a combination, therapy can help clarify and support you. You Deserve Therapy That Honors Your Neurotype If you’re looking for therapists who understand autism, respect neurodiversity, and provide affirming support for autistic traits and co-occurring challenges like OCD or anxiety, we can help. - Psychological Testing | Compassionate Healing Institute, LLC
Psychological Testing and Neuropsychological Assessment. We provide unique types of assessments including IQ gifted testing, ADHD assessments, comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations, dementia screening, psychoeducational assessment, psychological testing. Psychological Testing and Neuropsychological Assessment At Compassionate Healing Institute we offer a range of assessments tailored to understand and support the unique needs of our patients. Here's an overview of the types of assessments we conduct: Comprehensive Neuropsychological Testing : This in-depth evaluation is designed to assess cognitive functions such as memory, attention, perception, coordination, language, and personality. The goal is to identify changes in cognitive functioning that might be due to various medical, neurological, psychological, or psychiatric issues. This testing can be crucial for creating a treatment plan for conditions such as brain injuries, stroke, or neurological disorders. Dementia Screening: Early detection of dementia through screening can significantly affect the management of the condition. The screening tests we administer are designed to evaluate memory impairments, executive functioning, attention, language, and other cognitive abilities that may be affected by dementia. If screening suggests the possibility of dementia, a more comprehensive assessment may be recommended. Psychoeducational Assessment: This type of assessment is focused on learners to understand their cognitive, emotional, and educational abilities. It can be particularly helpful for identifying learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and giftedness in children and adolescents. The insights gained assist in developing educational interventions and accommodations to support the individual’s learning journey. Psychological Testing: Psychological testing encompasses a wide range of assessments to evaluate an individual's mental health and well-being. It can help diagnose mental health conditions, assess emotional functioning, and provide insights into personality traits. This information is valuable for developing a personalized therapeutic approach to address various mental health issues, including depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders and personality disorders. Each assessment type is selected based on the individual patient's presenting symptoms, history, and specific concerns. The results from these assessments are used to inform treatment planning, whether it’s for therapeutic interventions, educational planning, medical treatment, or to provide clarity on a diagnosis. Our approach ensures that each patient receives a thorough evaluation leading to supportive and targeted interventions that enhance their overall well-being and functionality. - ARFID | Compassionate Healing Institute, LLC.
ARFID can manifest in various ways, including avoidance of certain food textures, colors, or smells, as well as fear of choking or vomiting. Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive assessment by healthcare professionals, including a registered dietitian, psychologist, or psychiatrist. Treatment may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, nutritional counseling, and support from a healthcare team experienced in treating eating disorders. ARFID Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a complex eating disorder characterized by limited food intake due to sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences, or lack of interest in eating. While ARFID presents unlike other eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa because ARFID is not driven by body image concerns, individuals with ARFID may still experience significant nutritional deficiencies. Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including therapy to address underlying anxiety or sensory issues, as well as nutritional support to ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients. There are three types of ARFID presentations. One type is Avoidant, which is characterized by avoidance of foods due to sensory features such as food textures, colors, or smells. Another type is Aversive which is often a fear based refusal of food, which may include a fear of chocking, nausea, vomiting, pain or other averse consequence of eating. The third type of ARFID is Restrictive where individuals experience little to no interest in food, often experiencing low appetite and having a very limited food repertoire. Children with ARFID may have difficulty transitioning to solid foods or may refuse to eat entire food groups, leading to growth delays and nutritional deficiencies. In adults, ARFID can impact daily functioning, social interactions, and overall quality of life. Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive assessment by healthcare professionals, including a registered dietitian, psychologist, or psychiatrist. Early intervention is crucial for improving outcomes and preventing long-term health complications. Treatment includes cognitive-behavioral therapy, exposure therapy, nutritional counseling, and support from a healthcare team experienced in treating eating disorders. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) , Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is the diagnosis used for individuals who experience significant challenges with eating that lead to nutritional deficiencies, weight loss, or impaired psychosocial functioning. To receive a diagnosis of ARFID, the individual must exhibit one or more of the following: 1. Significant weight loss or failure to achieve expected weight gain or growth. 2. Nutritional deficiency. 3. Dependence on enteral feeding or oral nutritional supplements. 4. Significant interference with psychosocial functioning. ARFID is distinguished from other eating disorders by the absence of body image disturbance and the presence of restrictive eating behaviors not attributable to cultural or religious practices, lack of food availability, or another medical condition. If one or more of the above symptoms are present for you, please know you don't have to suffer and treatment is available. We provide a multidisciplinary treatment approach including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention and nutritional counseling which research shows it provides the best results for the treatment of ARFID. Exposure therapy is tailored to meet your own individual needs and so we provide in office exposure, as well as outside of the office and home visits. For Invididuals What to Expect at Compassionate Healing Institute Compassionate, Evidence-Based Care for Anxiety, OCD, and Eating Disorders in South Florida and all PsyPact States Taking the first step toward help can feel overwhelming — but at Compassionate Healing Institute (CHI), we’re here to make it easier. Our process is designed to help you feel informed, supported, and confident every step of the way. Whether you’re seeking help for OCD, an eating disorder, anxiety or related conditions you’ll receive specialized, integrated care grounded in compassion and clinical excellence. Step-by-Step Process: Your Treatment Journey Step 1: Free 15-Minute Phone Consultation Your journey begins with a complimentary phone consultation with one of our clinicians or intake specialists. This call is a safe, no-pressure opportunity to: Share a brief overview of what’s been going on Learn more about our approach to OCD, anxiety, and eating disorder treatment Ask questions about therapy options, or fees Determine whether CHI is the right fit for your needs We’ll also discuss logistics like scheduling, clinician availability, and whether a higher level of care (such as an intensive outpatient or residential program) might be more appropriate based on your current symptoms. If we’re a good fit, we’ll schedule your Intake Evaluation and send you secure forms to complete online. If your needs fall outside our scope, we’ll connect you with trusted referrals in the South Florida area — because our goal is to get you the right care, even if it’s not with us. Step 2: Comprehensive Intake Evaluation Your first in-person or telehealth session is a 60-minute comprehensive assessment focused on understanding you as a whole person, not just a diagnosis. During this evaluation, your clinician will: Explore your history with any presenting concerns including anxiety, OCD, and/or eating or body-related concerns Ask about your daily routines, triggers, and goals for recovery Review your medical and nutrition background (if applicable) Identify any urgent safety or medical concerns that may require medical or nutritional stabilization Use brief symptom questionnaires to help measure progress over time This stage helps us determine whether our traditional outpatient or intensive program best fits your needs. If appropriate, you may also meet with our Registered Dietitian, who specializes in disordered eating and food-related anxiety, for a parallel nutritional assessment. By the end of your intake process, you’ll have a clear understanding of your treatment recommendations, next steps, and a personalized plan to move forward safely and effectively. Step 3: Collaborative Treatment Planning Once initial assessment is complete, your clinician will meet with you to deliver a personalized treatment plan and recommendations for treatment structure tailored to your unique needs and goals. Together, we’ll: Identify specific therapy goals and milestones Discuss recommended modalities, such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or nutrition therapy Clarify session frequency, estimated length of treatment, and any between-session work You’ll leave this step knowing exactly what to expect — and that your care plan is collaborative, flexible, and centered around you. Step 4: Active Treatment Phase This is where progress takes root. You’ll meet with your therapist weekly (or multiple times per week for intensive clients) to build new skills, face fears, and practice recovery-oriented behaviors. Treatment may include: ERP sessions to reduce anxiety-driven rituals, compulsions and avoidance CBT tools to reframe thinking errors or self-critical thoughts Meal support and nutrition exposure work to rebuild confidence with food Values-based work and relapse prevention strategies to sustain long-term recovery If multiple providers are involved in your care, we’ll coordinate closely to ensure a consistent and integrated approach. Step 5: Adjusting Intensity When Needed Recovery isn’t linear, and that’s okay. Treatment at Compassionate Healing Institute includes ongoing evaluation, allowing your clinician to monitor progress and adjust the treatment structure as needed. These adjustments may include modifying your current plan or, when appropriate, recommending a higher level of care to best support your safety, recovery, and long-term success. If you’re making consistent progress, we may gradually reduce frequency to foster independence and long-term confidence. Step 6: Review, Taper, and Aftercare As your goals are met, your clinician will help you develop a maintenance plan to prevent relapse and sustain progress. You’ll receive: A summary of your progress and key coping tools Guidance for managing future stressors or triggers Optional check-in or “booster” sessions for continued support Our goal is for you to leave treatment feeling empowered, grounded, and confident in your ability to maintain the changes you’ve worked so hard for. What You Can Expect from Us Evidence-based, compassionate treatment tailored to your needs Transparent, collaborative communication Coordination with dietitians, physicians, or psychiatrists when appropriate A safe, inclusive space that honors your pace and personal goals What We Ask of You Bring openness and curiosity — you don’t have to be “ready,” just willing Practice honesty about what’s working and what feels hard Try your best with exposures and between-session practice Let us know if something feels off — we’ll adjust together Preparing for Your First Appointment Complete your pre-intake paperwork If available, share recent lab results or medical notes Write down any questions or goals you’d like to discuss Come as you are — nervous, hopeful, or unsure — we’ll meet you there Ready to Begin?
