Emetophobia: Fear of vomiting

Most people dislike vomiting. For those with emetophobia, the fear becomes intense, persistent, and difficult to control.
Emetophobia is the fear of vomiting, seeing others vomit, feeling nauseous, or becoming sick. This fear can lead to significant anxiety and avoidance that impacts work, school, relationships, travel, and eating.

At Compassionate Healing Institute, we help children, teens, and adults overcome emetophobia using evidence-based treatments that reduce fear and increase confidence.

Common Signs of Emetophobia
You may be struggling with emetophobia if you:
-
Avoid certain foods or restaurants
-
Worry excessively about food poisoning or stomach viruses
-
Constantly check expiration dates or food preparation practices
-
Seek reassurance that you won’t get sick
-
Avoid travel, public places, or social gatherings
-
Frequently monitor your body for signs of nausea
-
Experience panic when feeling nauseous
-
Restrict what or how much you eat due to fear of vomiting

While these behaviors may temporarily reduce anxiety, they often strengthen the fear over time.

Emetophobia, OCD, and ARFID
Emetophobia often overlaps with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

Some individuals become trapped in cycles of intrusive thoughts, reassurance-seeking, checking, and avoidance. Others begin limiting foods they consider “unsafe,” leading to increasingly restrictive eating patterns.
Because these conditions can look similar, a thorough assessment is important to determine the most effective treatment approach.

How We Treat Emetophobia
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is one of the most effective treatments for emetophobia and OCD-related fears.
Together, we gradually face feared situations while reducing avoidance and safety behaviors. Examples may include:
-
Eating previously avoided foods
-
Dining at restaurants
-
Traveling farther from home
-
Tolerating uncertainty about illness
-
Reducing reassurance-seeking and checking behaviors
Treatment is collaborative, individualized, and paced appropriately for each client.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps individuals identify unhelpful thought patterns and develop healthier ways of responding to anxiety, uncertainty, and physical sensations.

Nutrition Therapy
For those whose fear has impacted eating, our eating disorder-informed dietitians can help restore flexibility, expand food variety, and support nutritional adequacy as part of the recovery process.

Family Support
For children and teens, family involvement can play an important role. We help caregivers reduce accommodations that unintentionally maintain anxiety while supporting their child’s recovery.
